The 2009 Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala - The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion

Rihanna looked fierce in a black puff sleeve suit with a white ruffle shirt and bow tie, all by Dolce and Gabbana.

Madonna played the muse for Louis Vuitton, donning Fall/Winer Collection runway look 13 with Louis Vuitton accessories.

 

Kate Moss, one of the evening's co-hosts, pictured with designer Marc Jacobs.  Kate wore a gold lame dress and turban by Marc, which reportedly caused Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley to proclaim, "Goddess!"  upon seeing her this eve.  Kate's shoes were YSL Trib 2 pumps in gold, which were a special edition for Kate.

Anna Wintour, one of the evening's co-hosts, wearing Chanel.

Justin Timberlake, one of the evening's co-hosts, steps out in a William Rast ensemble.  Jessica Biel chose a china red silk organza gown from the Versace Atelier SS09 Collection.  She accessorized Christian Louboutin shoes and Fred Leighton jewelry, including platinum-set rose cut diamond earrings and a platinum-set sapphire ring.

Bee Schaeffer wore a navy Nina Ricci gown paired with two VBH Bracelets and a pair of VBH earrings.  Setting a trend for the evening, Bee paired her blue frock with black accessories including her clutch and peep-toe heels.

Fitting the theme of the evening Gisele modeled a custom-made blue short Versace pailette dress with Versace heels and clutch from the Fall/Winter Collection.

Vogue's Andre Leon Talley was dressed in an Isabel Toledo robe and heavyweight jewelry from Roger Vivier.

Eva Mendes, pictured with Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa, wore a vintage Calvin Klein one-off gold lame banded v-neck gown.  Continuing a relationship with the house is a natural fit since it was recently announced that Eva will be featured with Jamie Dornan in the upcoming Calvin Klein Jeans and Calvin Klein underwear campaigns.

Cindy Crawford chose to wear a custom china-blue Versace dress with Versace sandals and clutch from the Fall/Winter Collection.  Versace white gold and diamond earrings finished off her look.

Mary-Kate paid homage to Christian Lacroix in one of the designer's vintage haute couture gowns with a draped bodice in gray pleated chiffon over a full ruffled skirt in charcoal falle overlaid in metallic lace and silver embroidered bustier-basque.  She paired the gown with Brian Atwood shoes.

Kate Hudson wore Stella McCartney's gold gown accessorized with black patent Brian Atwood peep-toe shoes from the Fall 2009 collection (not pictured).  Kate's jewelry was from Fred Leighton.

Liv Tyler was another of Stella McCartney's evening muses.  She chose to wear the designer's blue custom gown paired with black heels.  The look was completed with Fred Leighton's 1920s diamond and sapphire ring set in platnium.

Anne Hathaway gets it right in a short Marc Jacobs dress, Pour la Victoire statement heels, and Van Cleef & Arpels platinium and emerald earrings.

Brooklyn Decker, pictured with date for the evening Derek Lam, chose to wear the designer's black sequined pantsuit and black sandals.  She accessorized her look with Tiffany & Co. jewelry including alternating square/baguette diamond tassel earrings set in platnium, a round diamond scroll archival bracelet and a pear diamond flower bracelet set in platinum.

Model Bar Rafaeli chose to wear an asymmetrical pleated dress with embroidered detail by Marchesa and pointy toe pumps.  She added to the look with Chopard jewelry including elongated pear shape diamond earrings and a 36 ct cushion cut diamond bracelet.

Marisa Tomei woree a vintage gown from Lily et Cie in Los Angeles paired with Tod's Girelli pouchette in cream satin.

Beauty Kate Bosworth wore a Stella McCartney gown and Fred Leighton jewelry including 6.5 cts (each) European cut diamond stud earrings, a diamond A line bracelet and a three stone diamond ring set in platnium.

Looking Posh as ever Victoria Beckham wore a Marc Jacobs look with Louis Vuitton shoes and a Chopard "spectacular ruby" ring.

Marion Coltiard arrived on the arm of John Galliano wearing a gown from the designer.   She chose Chopard jewelry to compliment the look including a fancy yellow pear shaped diamond necklace and a fancy brown pear shaped diamond cocktail ring send in Cognac diamond micropave.

Heidi Klum chose a sweeping J Mendel gown which she paired with a VBH clutch.

Elizabeth Banks, pictured with Alberta Ferretti, wore a  custom made navy dress from the designer paired with a black VBH crocodile clutch and black peep toe Christian Louboutins.  Ruby earrings (20 ct) are also from VBH.

Kerry Washington brought Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter runway collection Look 1 to lifeAccessories are also by Louis Vuitton.

Model as Muse Jessica Stam inspired design duo Rodarte.  She wore their dress paired with Nicholas Kirkwood heels.

Molly Sims chose a gold dress with a black belt by Dolce & Gabbana.  She accessorized with a D + G jeweled handbag and Tom Binns jewelry.

Burberry's muses included iconic models past and present.  Agyness Deyn chose to wear a custom made taupe velvet pleated floor length gown from the house with Burberry accessories.  Twiggy wore a Burberry custom classic wool satin ciggarette trouser tuxedo with puff-sleeve detailing, white evening shirt and a white patent leather cartridge pleated clutch.

Emmy Rossum chose to wear a smoke organza cloque gown with keyhole back.  She wore Bochic rose cut diamond earrings to complete the look.

Leighton Meester wore Louis Vuitton F/W runway look 35 and LV accessories.

Hilary Swank was a Calvin Klein muse in a custom Calvin Klein collection rouge silk gauze gathered gown.

Claire Danes represented Armani Prive in a gown from the house, accessorized with Tiffany & Co jewelry including a Marquise-Square link diamond bracelet and classic Lucidia Diamond earrings, both set in platnium.  Claire attended with Hugh Dancy who wore a custom made black wool linen single button tuxedo from Burberry.

Selma Blair wore a Marc Jacobs dress, pointy toe pumps and a contrasting turquoise clutch.  Jewelry from brazillian designer Jack Vartanian completed the look including 4.04 ct diamond stud earrings.

Kirsten Dunst chose to wear Chanel Haute Couture.  She paired the navy tulle embroidered gown with a Chanel Fine Jewelry bracelet, Christian Louboutin shoes and a Ferragamo clutch.

Renee Zellweger stayed loyal to designer Carolina Herrera in a forest green striped cloque gown.

Kate Beckinsale chose to wear an embroidered midnight blue ruffle tulle tank dress by Marchesa.

Karl Lagerfeld muse Diane Kruger chose Chanel Haute Couture look 44 from the Spring/Summer 09 Collection.  She accessorized with a Chanel clutch and Chanel fine jewelry including Camelia Ring and Brooches (worn in her hair) in 18 k white gold with black and white diamonds.  Date Joshua Jackson wore a navy peak lapel tuxedo with a white tuxedo shirt and black bow tie by Dolce & Gabbana.

Helena Christensen, pictured with designer Zac Posen, was en Vogue with a custom made cocktail creation designed for the evening.  She accessorized with Fred Leighton jewelry including a 1930's diamond bracelet and a 1930's orchid bracelet, both set in platinum.

Classic muse Claudia Schiffer pushed the envelope in a stunning Versace Atelier Spring/Summer 09 silk organza evening gown paired with a Versace evening clutch.

Singer Katy Perry channeled a modern-day Cleopatra in a striking Tommy Hillfiger gown.

An androgynous Lake Bell chose Rag & Bone tuxedo look with a fedora and "Aria" clutch by Raven for Raven Kauffman.  Jewelry by H. Stern included a black diamond ring from the Golden Stones collection set in 18K noble gold.

Emma Heming wore a belted capsleeve dark teal jersey gown with antiqued mirror constellation embroidery by Donna Karan.  She completed the look with a Donna Karan silver "Element" clutch and Fred Leighton jewels.

Winona Ryder chose a monochromatic Marc Jacobs look.

Rosario Dawson chose to wear a Diane von Furstenberg gown with H. Stern's Stars medallion bracelet in 18K noble gold and the brand's Phoebe earrings and Floral ring both set in 18K white gold with diamonds.

Model Amber Rose chose a Carolina Herrera persimmon strapless silk organze gown with a VBH clutch.  Date Kanye West sported a custom made tuxedo from Louis Vuitton.

Rachel Bilson attended with footwear designer Brian Atwood.  In honor of her date she chose to wear head-to-toe Bally including her dress, heels, and clutch.

Emma Roberts made her Met Gala debut in a Versace Atelier Spring/Summer 2009 bubble shaped minidress with embroidered red sequins.  Shoes are black Versace sandals from the Fall Collection.

Ashley Olsen opted to wear a gown from her own line, The Row.

Eva Longoria Parker paired a Diane von Furstenberg gown with a necklace created by linking two bold white gold pave-diamond Sutra Bracelets from the Diane von Furstenberg for H. Stern Collection.

Rachel Weisz served as a muse for Vera Wang in the designer's strapless blush hand painted tulle draped gown with layered flounce and acid green petticoat. 

Blake Lively chose a peacock green chiffon Fall/Winter Collection Versace gown.  She accessorized with Spring/Summer 2009 Collection Versace silk satin sandals and a VBH clutch (not pictured).  Black attended with Penn Badgley who wore a Versace Spring/Summer 2009 Collection black tuxedo with the brand's black patent leather shoes.

Leslie Mann wore an Oscar de la Renta red duchess satin strapless draped gown with kimono sash from the Fall/Winter Collection.  She added extra dazzle to the ensemble with H. Stern jewelry including a Tudor bracelet in 18K Noble Gold and smoky-quartz gems with Zephyr earrings in 18K Noble Gold and Cognac diamonds.

Elizabeth Hurley chose Elie Saab couture.

Singer Ciara wore a sleek Pucci gown and accessorized with 2.80 carat black diamond stud earrings from Jack Vartanian. 

Ivanka Trump wore a custom blush tulle Brian Reyes floret gown.  She added to the look with Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry and a Judith Leiber bag.

Jessica Alba embodied the black-and-blue trend of the evening in her Jason Wu dress paired with custom-made Bruno Frisoni for Jason Wu shoes.  She chose Van Cleef & Arpels estate bracelets set in platnium and earrings to complete the look.

Anna Friel chose to wear Brit designer Jasmine di Milo.  Her shoes were Stuart Wetizman and her clutch was from Sergio Rossi.  Her several strands of long necklaces  were all from Colette in LA.  She worked with stylist Marjan Malakpour.

Carla Gugino wore a Kenneth Cole dress with jewelry from Lorraine Schwartz.  She was styled by Jessica Paster.

Joy Bryant pictured with designer Rachel Roy (center) and model Lakshmi Menon (left) wore the designer's nude silk and wool strapless mini dress with fabric insets and feather/crystal detail.  Her jewelry was Harry Winston earrings, and personal bracelet and rings.  Styled by Rachel Zoe.
